The third and final season of Wander Over Yonder was confirmed to be in early planning stages until the show was canceled by Disney. The cancelation occurred five months after writing wrapped up on Season 2, and before its first episode aired. Although the Season 3 pitch reportedly went over well with DisneyXD and TVA, unspecified higher-ups canceled the show. Craig McCracken claimed the decision was not due to low ratings, but simply that "2 seasons and 80 cartoons was enough." However, in 2022, he claimed the higher-ups "didn't really get it" and the show's low popularity was a factor.

Following the announcement by Craig on March 5th, 2016, fans began to campaign across social media for the series' renewal under the hashtag "SaveWOY." An online petition posted the same day currently sits at over 62,000 signatures.

Major Details

The Star Nomad

The Star Nomad made a brief cameo in "The Waste of Time." It was planned to be a major setting for Season 3. After defeating Lord Dominator in "The End of the Galaxy," all of the characters would be stranded on the secret planet. In order to bring everybody back home, Wander would lead a team effort to rebuild a ship that crash landed during The Secret Planet. The ship would have been powered by orbbles, and Lord Hater, Commander Peepers, and the Watchdogs would be among its passengers. Wander and Hater would have shared a room. Craig explained the thought process behind The Star Nomad: "We realized in certain episodes, when we put (Wander, Sylvia, Hater, Peepers) together, they were like magic. We were like, 'How do we do more of that?'"

Monkeyboy

Monkeyboy made a brief cameo in The Waste of Time, and was teased in the end credits animatic for "The End of the Galaxy." Frank Angones revealed the character's name on Tumblr and that he was an important part of Season 3. He declined to answer further questions on the subject, but admitted the character was "connected to more than one of our mains in a major way." He would later clarify Monkeyboy was not the Season 3 antagonist.

Star Force Enforcement Force

The Star Force Enforcement Force was the name of a "team of space cops." They would have played an unspecified role in Season 3, and were brand new characters unrelated to any of the main cast.

Hints

There is no official synopsis for Season 3. However, two prominent members of the production crew answered questions on Tumblr about Wander Over Yonder from early 2015 to late 2016. After the series' cancelation was announced, they provided vague details about Season 3. Other major details and hints were shared by Craig from 2021-2023 (see Star Nomad).

Q: "So, did all the planets in the galaxy come back to life, or just the few that were touched by the flower?"

A: "The implication was they would all regrow."

Q: "Was there any plans for a musical in Season 3?"

A: "We hadn't gotten that specific yet. An overall story was planned, but not every episode."

Q: "Does Hater have a family canonically?"

A: "It would have been covered in Season 3."

Frank Angones

Q: "Did the cancellation change any plans you had for the story in season 2? Did you avoid starting any ideas for story or character arcs that wouldn't have been satisfactorily resolved by the end of the season? Or bring forward some things so that it could?"

A: "Unfortunately, writing was wrapped on S2 five months before we received word of the cancellation, so we didn’t really have the opportunity to adjust stories. (Had we known, there are DEFINITELY a few things we would have done differently. We were pretty dang confident we were getting a season 3, so we left some plot lines kinda open, but nothing too big.) We also held off on telling some MAJOR stories for all four of our mains to have somewhere to go. Season two was a lot about testing Hater; three would have been about testing Wander in a really cool way."

Q: "How many seasons did you guys originally planned[sic] for Wander Over Yonder to have in total?"

A: "Three total. S3 had possible endings for all of the mains that we felt were satisfying."

Q: "Were there any plans for a season 4 or were you guys just planning on having 3?"

A: "I think three would have wrapped it all up. We knew where everyone ended up by the end of it and I loved every single one."

Q: "Were you guys going to change the intro [sequence for] season 3? (Now that the planets are new)"

A: "We’d talked about it, given the status quo change planned for S3."

Q: "[W]as dominator supposed to be on season three? [A]nd I know you were probably already asked about it, but can you share what was going to happen on season three?"

A: "Don’t want to share specifics on Season 3, other than to say that we had a plan to highlight the ensemble more.  Part of the problem with hopping from planet to planet all over the galaxy in a show that’s only 11 minutes long at a time is that every time you want to bring someone back, you have to justify their presence. So in planning for Season 3, we actually held a draft for characters we’d want to bring more to the forefront in the ensemble. Some of the selections shouldn’t be surprising as they were the most fun to write.  Among them we had plans for Dominator, Demurra and Dracor[sic] and their Kids, Awesome, Neckbeard, Mittens, Andy, and [the Black Cube of Darkness]."

Q: "Was there any plan for some epic battles or epic moments for season 3, like in the battle royale or in the end of the galaxy?"

A: "3 Tentpoles and a two part finale was the plan."

Q: "How many episodes were planned to be made for season three of WOY?"

A: "Same as usual, around 23. Mostly shorts with a few 22 minute specials."

Q: "Season 3 was supposed to be as long as S2?"

A: "That was the pitch, but we had alternate versions of the final story, from a 13 episode final season to a two hour movie to an hour special to a half hour finale. I keep mentioning that every chance I get; just wish we could wrap it up right."

Q: "[C]ould you possibly give us a hint as to what sort of episode a 22 minute long ep in season 3 [would've] been like? [Would there have] been another musical?"

A: "It was another four part serialized story that tied the season together. Had talked about maybe making the last one an hour long finale special."

Q: "Did the sudden cancellation/end of the show affect anything major about Season 3's writing and finale or were things open-ended enough?"

A: "Season 3 was always planned as a payoff to the big story we’d been telling since the beginning."

Q: "The events in season 2 were suppouse[sic] to have repercussions in season 3?"

A: "Season 3 would pay off stuff from both one and two, dealing with both who Hater was at the top of the show and who he had become after saving the galaxy and how he dealt with that."

Q: "Would season 3 of Wander have been even darker than season 2?"

A: "I dunno. It definitely would have been MUCH sillier."

Q: "Now that there were new planets in the galaxy, was that going to be a thing for the other characters?"

A: "Yup."

Q: "About Hater's reputation was that going to change in any way in Season 3 (after he came to the rescue in the finale)?"

A: "Yes and no."

Q: "Was a friendship arc for Wander and Hater ever planned for season 3?"

A: "That was kinda the arc of the whole series. It definitely would have built to something in S3."

Q: "If Hater was reformed would Commander Peepers follow Hater? Or would he stay evil?"

A: "Cannot answer in case we get back to it. We had something planned."

Q: "What was Peepers' story arc supposed to be like?"

A: "C. Peeps was going to be tempted by the dark(er) side…"

Q: "Did you all have a main third villain or some sort of threat planned for Season 3?"

A: "The main arc of season 3 was centered around the arrival of a new danger that was even more of a threat than Dominator, meant to challenge Wander in every possible way. Season 2 was all about a bully showing up. Season 3 was about something worse than a bully."

Q: "You said that season three would've introduced a new bad guy who was worse than Dominator. [...] How bad is 'worse'?"

A: "'Worse' is relative. Worse for who and how."

Q: "Are you saying that there was gonna be a villain who was more of a threat than Dominator in season 3?!"

A: "I said threat. I never said villain."

Q: "Since the threats of season 3 are worse than Dominator, that has me wondering. Do they know more about Wander's weaknesses and how to use them against him?"

A: "Dominator knew how to exploit everyone’s weaknesses. The S3 villain knew how to exploit everyone’s strengths."

Q: "That monkey pic [in] 'the waste of time' ...was that season 3 material?"

A: "That was a character called 'Monkeyboy' who was going to play a big part in Season 3, yes. We loved him so much that we wanted him to be a part of the show somehow, so Craig slipped him in there."

Q: "I remember that when it came to the Angry Space Monkey (sorry, can't recall his official name) the crew said that he was going to be a threat on a totally different level. But when one villain was after galactic domination, and the other after galactic destruction AND the demise of the heroes, where do you go from there?"

A: "I think you may be conflating a couple of things. [Monkeyboy] wasn’t the antagonistic force. As for the Season 3 threat, there are fates worse than galactic destruction."

Q: "Is the S3 villian someone we have seen before?"

A: "Nope."

Q: "If Hater is who we are, and Dominator is who we are if we're left unchecked, what was the season 3 villian[sic]?"

A: "Ego. Id. Super-ego."

Q: "So, earlier you said the the WoY Season 3 villain would be Id, Ego, Superego (is that right?). Is this Freudian psychology?"

A: "Never said that was the case. Just that the clue to the S3 villain was in there somewhere."

Q: "About the danger for S3, it was a single danger or a plural one?"

A: "Three new mains were to be introduced."

Q: "If you'd[sic] did get a season 3 for the show. Will you plan to introduce new characters, apart from those, who already appeared in season 2 or to remove someone from a main or minor? [...] And what is the probability that [Dominator] will appear in season 3?"

A: "We had planned, at the very least, three new mains for Season 3 and a couple new regulars. And there was a surprising status quo change for Barry the Watchdog. [...] If it did come back, she'd be in it. In fact the first shot we talked about picks up with her directly after the season 2 finale."

Q: Will we find out what happened with Lord Dominator next? Or we have to forget about this character in the third season??"

A: "Dom was a big part of the third season plan. Craig had an amazing new angle for her that was delightfully petty but wholly Dominator."

Q: "Will Dominator be coming back in WOYS3?"

A: "First image of S3: Dominator, still walking through space in an orbble, grumbling."

Q: "What role exactly was [Dominator] supposed to have in Season 3?"

A: "Can’t say. Suffice it to say, things were gonna get worse for Dom before they got better."

Q: "No more Seasons, Choose the Movie"

A: "Wander confronts Lord Hater’s previous best friend."

Q: "[I am curious], what happen[ed] with [Draykor] and [Demurra's] kids?!?!?"

A: "They had an entire episode planned around them in Season 3."

Q: "What would Sylvia do if she had her own spin-off series?"

A: "Would have been answered in S3."

Q: "If Peepers and the watchdogs are native to the galaxy in the series, does that mean their home planet was destroyed?!"

A: "Spoilers."

Q: "Would we have learned where the watchdogs come from in season 3?"

A: "Yup."
